The Montblanc Masters of Art collection pays tribute to his immortal contribution to the pursuit of perfection in art, a pursuit in which Montblanc celebrates and participates. An artist whose vision helped shape Viennese Art Nouveau and the Golden Age is Gustav Klimt.
The Limited Edition 4810 Montblanc Masters of Art Homage to Gustav Klimt celebrates his artistic beginnings in the Viennese Secession and highlights in its design elements of his masterpieces Pallas Athena and The Kiss. In his rebellion against stereotypical concepts of art and society, Gustav Klimt was a pioneer of the avant-garde. He fused realistic representation, ornamentation and abstraction in a style that reached its climax in his large-format, subtly sensual feminine paintings. One of his first paintings to give equal value to ornament and model was a 1902 portrait of his companion and muse Emilie Flöge, depicted in a dreamy, almost mystical blue.
This artwork was the basis for the blue tone used in the Limited Edition 4810 Masters of Art Homage to Gustav Klimt. The circles, swirls, triangles and lines that shine through the dark blue translucent lacquer of the writing instrument come from his famous painting The Kiss, in which two lovers seem to dissolve into ornamental and geometric shapes thanks to the force of the emotion. Composed of translucent blue lacquer and hammered yellow gold metal, the writing instrument's cap and barrel make effective use of complementary colors in reference to Gustav Klimt's famous Golden Phase works, including Portrait of Adele Bloch. Bauer I, the Stoclet Frieze and The Kiss. Klimt used a new technique to enrich the colors of it with individual sections of gold leaf, so that an impression of precious stones set in gold was created.
In the Limited Edition 4810, the yellow gold-plated hammered bezel is set with a synthetic green spinel, a color that evokes spring, the season of new beginnings. Klimt's Secession monogram, a gold pad print with his initials, GK, commemorates his achievements for the Vienna Secession. The Limited Edition 4810 Homage to Gustav Klimt clip is specially designed in reference to Gustav Klimt's Pallas Athena. Since Athena is the goddess of both war and the arts, she is depicted as sparking the fight for artistic freedom. The slightly curved lines ending in three spirals on the yellow gold-plated clip correspond to the decoration of the forged metal frame.
The handcrafted 750 yellow gold nib shows the detailed engraving of an owl, which symbolizes knowledge, wisdom and insight and was considered the faithful companion animal of the Greek goddess Athena. The engraving is both a reference to Gustav Klimt's painting of Pallas Athena and to the Secession building, whose side facades are decorated with sculptures of owls.
