The Ferrari name is synonymous with aesthetic design, powerful engines, almost endless technical innovation and one of the most influential men in the history of motorsport. With great vision and an unbridled passion for motorsport, Enzo Ferrari led his company to unprecedented prestige and created an enduring legend. Montblanc has dedicated its Montblanc Great Personalities Enzo Ferrari Special Edition to this man and his passion for racing. Inspired by the coat of arms of Enzo Ferrari’s hometown of Modena and the iconic colour of the Scuderia logo, this edition pays tribute to Ferrari’s second soul: the colour yellow. The dates of Enzo Ferrari’s birth and his first race victory are engraved on the cap, while his signature and the name of his father’s workshop (Officina Meccanica Alfredo Ferrari), in reference to Enzo Ferrari’s birthplace, are engraved on the top of the cap. It is surmounted by the Montblanc emblem in precious blue resin, another tribute to the Modena coat of arms, and surrounded by intricate metalwork evoking the grille of a vintage car. Enzo Ferrari’s first victory, at the Circuito del Savio, also marked the birth of the now-famous Ferrari logo. Among the many spectators who admired Enzo Ferrari’s daring driving that day was expert driver Francesco Baracca, who had served during World War II in the same unit as Enzo’s brother Dino. Francesco Baracca’s mother, Countess Paolina Biancoli, commented that Enzo Ferrari should use the emblem of a bridleless, runaway horse from her son’s plane on his cars for good luck. The horse’s association with the courage and desire to dominate of a national hero made it a fitting symbol for Enzo. Nine years later, the Cavallino Rampante was used for the first time on a yellow background to decorate a car. It was 1932 and the 24 Hours of Spa were taking place. The Scuderia Ferrari team took first and second place with two cars decorated with the Prancing Horse. The Prancing Horse is engraved on the cap of the Montblanc Great Personalities Enzo Ferrari Special Edition, along with the Countess’s words: Le porterà fortuna (It will bring you luck). The first car built by Ferrari, the twelve-cylinder 125 S, left the Maranello factory on 12 March 1947. Twelve engraved lines symbolise the twelve cylinders. Enzo Ferrari’s motto, “You cannot describe passion, you can only live it”, decorates the ruthenium-plated clip. As a tribute to Enzo’s success, the ruthenium-plated 585 gold nib is engraved with the word Pilota (one of his nicknames) and the steering wheel of the 250 GTO, one of the most famous racing cars in the world.
